Conventional protection methods use dc circuit breakers or ac short-circuit switches to interrupt fault currents. However, these methods require additional equipment, which increases costs and reduces system reliability. The proposed method introduces a novel half-bridge modular multilevel converter (HB-MMC) as the offshore converter, in which the lower arm inductors are relocated to the upper arm. In the event of a dc fault, this converter can suppress the fault current to zero by operating in a mode referred to as lower arm short protection. The proposed method can be implemented by partially reconfiguring the HB-MMC and does not require additional dc circuit breakers or ac short-circuit switches. Therefore, it offers advantages in terms of both cost and reliability to conventional methods.
