In this work, we studied effects of chronic stimulation on spontaneous contraction rhythms of cultured cardiomyocytes. Cardiomyocytes were taken from new-born rats and cultured on microelectrode-array (MEA) substrates. Electrical stimulation, the interval of which was a little shorter than the spontaneous contraction, was applied through the embedded electrodes of the MEAs and the spontaneous rhythms were compared between before and after stimulation. Externally applied rhythms were successfully induced by chronic stimulation for three hours. The results suggested that the contraction rhythm could be controlled by externally applied chronic electrical stimulation.
