In general, a branch outage contingency may result in the overload and voltage drop. Specially, in some most severe cases voltage collapse may occur. Althrough there are some methods for evaluating the voltage stability, it is also necessary for planner or operator to determine the reactive power margins of system so as to make preventive\/corrective control measures to maintain the system stable. These examinations will need information on reactive power margins in contingencies. Since there are a large number of contingency selections to be analyzed，a fast computation method is required.This paper decribes a fast method to compute the reactive power margins in post-fault conditions. First, the voltage values in post-fault conditions with respect to the saddle node bifurcation are effectively evaluated based on sensitivity analysis, which is further improved by using a line search technique. The obtained voltages are used to compute the reactive power margins.
