Although transmission systems are nor-mally shielded by ground wires, there is a probability of power supply interruptions because of back flashover and shielding failure. The application of line arresters has increased because it is evaluated as an effective counter-measure against lightning-initiated faults. The installation of lightning arresters on all the phases of each tower can eliminate almost entirely faults caused by lightning but is a very expensive solution. A selective installation of ar-resters should be considered instead.
