This short-term operation problem is called as unit commitment (UC) problem. The system operator has responsibility to obtain the best operating strategy which gives minimum expected operation cost while satisfying the prevailing constraints. This problem becomes much more complicated since in the actual planning problem, the operator faces the uncertainty coming from demand forecast error and generating unit unavailability [1].
