要約(日本語): To make sustainable off-grid electric power systems such as that in remote islands, the introduction of renewable energy power sources becomes an issue. If we view this as an optimization problem that maximizes the happiness of mankind, it seems that not only engineering research but also humanities and social sciences viewpoints are necessary. This paper describes examples of history and culture of some remote islands in Japan and examples of off-grid power systems including renewable energy power sources. Issues about local energy communities are also stated considering engineering together with history and culture of local areas and risk management for natural disasters.
