要約(英語): Among Japanese lamp companies, Tokyo Electric Light Company opened in 1887 with DC, and Osaka Electric Light Company opened with AC in 1889. The selections of succeeding companies were influenced　by the two leading companies. In those days, leading engineers shared information about the characteristics of AC and DC and the dangers of electricity through overseas visits. In light of these circumstances, this paper examines the reasons for the selection and operational characteristics for each company. And it also examines issues and measures taken by the electric light companies that selected DC in the process of converting to AC.
