要約(英語): Automotive millimeter wave radars for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving systems are needed to achieve accurate target imaging functionalities on roads. Small targets, including pedestrians, cycles, animals, and on-road debris, are significantly vulnerable and critical things on the road. Automotive millimeter wave radars must accurately identify these vulnerable and dangerous targets to avoid serious traffic accidents. Although fast chirp modulation (FCS) frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) multiple input multiple outputs (MIMO) radars (FCM-FMCW-MIMO radars) can resolve multiple targets with enough different ranges, velocities, and angles with large target sizes. However, current automotive millimeter wave radars cannot discriminate small targets on spatial spectra that estimate target angles from inherent sidelobes. These sidelobes are referred to as ghost peaks. This paper proposes a method to discriminate small targets from ghost peaks by introducing thinned antenna arrays and large targets canceling on antenna element space. Experimental results using a millimeter wave radar validate the proposed method.
