要約(日本語): Green mussel (Perna viridis) aquaculture along the Gulf of Thailand’s shoreline is important and beneficial to the local economy. The natural abundance, growth performance, and low-cost aquaculture technique make the green mussel a viable source of inexpensive protein with high nutritional value. The annual production of Thai green mussel is ~70,000 tons with the calcium carbonate (CaCO3) shell accounting for 60% of total production. The green mussel shell (GMS) is considered an agricultural waste and normally discarded to landfill. Although 95% of the CaCO3 in the shell is aragonite with trace amount of calcite covered by green periostracum (protein and chitin), there is currently no appropriate technology for harvesting shell aragonite with economical feasibility and environmental benefit.
