要約(日本語): Neurons form networks via synaptic connections. Spatiotemporal dynamics of neuronal activities are modified with external stimuli, related to memory and learning. As a novel stimulation method, we demonstrated noninvasive, single-neuron stimulation with a focused femtosecond laser. Laser-evoked responses were analyzed with fluorescence Ca2+ imaging and multi-site extracellular recording. 
A femtosecond laser (center wavelength 800 nm, pulse width ~100 fs, repetition rate 82 MHz) was focused to cultured neurons, and then intracellular Ca2+ drastically increased. Further, network-wide electrical responses were induced for 60 ms. Our results suggest that a femtosecond laser irradiation is effective to reveal the spatiotemporal dynamics of neuronal activities.
