要約(日本語): Large 3D graphics models are becoming pervasive in network-based applications. However the complexity of these 3D models far exceeds the limits of what can be quickly downloaded at popular connection speeds and what can be easily stored and rendered for interactive exploration on personal desktops, even when additionally fitted with affordable 3D accelerator hardware.
We present a framework for rendering complex 3D models at nearly interactive rates. This includes: Reduction of the complexity of meshes by simplification, thereby reducing the number of vertices and faces in the mesh; Compact representation of the connectivity and geometry data of the mesh; Automatic generation of multi-resolution object hierarchies for level-of-detail-based rendering.
These result in substantial savings in rendering, transmission, and storage.
