要約(日本語): Flexible Qualitative Modeling of Mobile Data Gathering in the Corporate WorldAn emerging trend in many large corporate environments in Japan is to equip employees with notebook pcs and mobile phones as a replacement for traditional desktop pcs and fixed phone lines. For many large organizations with wide geographic coverage and large field force, the idea of shedding wires and cables takes root from the need to reduce investment in local regional offices, parking spaces and utilities bills. Equipped with mobility, the trend is for field force to move directly from their homes to customer locations without the need to report to a common physical office location. Staffs are able to access the Internet and the corporate IT network to update their address books and applications; and stay directly in touch with their area managers and the head office anytime anywhere. All these give the impression that pervasive computing is becoming a reality in Japan.Unfortunately however, most companies that have gone mobile have failed to effectively utilize the potentials of the mobile devices. As the notebook pcs and the mobile phones are networked, their functionality goes beyond being mere tools for just “keeping in touch” and getting on the Internet or retrieving data. Notebook pcs and Japanese mobile phones have the potential of providing very powerful marketing tools for entities to become more resilient in taking on competitive challenges in the market-place. These tools can effectively be used for data gathering and analysis; competitive monitoring by capturing competitor action real-time and relaying back to head office; customer intimacy; and operational efficiency etc. This paper attempts to provide a flexible qualitative modeling framework for corporate entities to transcend beyond the usage of notebook pcs and mobile phones as mere communication devices. At the next stage of mobility, corporations should be able to exploit these mobile devices for networked data gathering and analysis, real-time in-house market research, human resource management and corporate disaster recovery. Mobility offers the potential for companies to synchronize notebooks and mobile phones as networked “wearable sensors”. A case study-approach is adopted by utilizing the current situation of an organization in the tobacco industry in Japan.
