We are interested in sound processing in the auditory system, the auditory cortex in particular. Using the technique of real-time imaging with voltage sensitive dyes, we were able to parcel the auditory cortex in guinea pigs and in mice into a number of functional subfields, based on locations, latencies, and tonotopy of responses evoked by tones. Further, the information carried by population activity in the primary auditory cortex on tone frequency was examined and the frequency discrimination limen was found to be comparable to that at the behavioral level.
