要約(日本語): 1950年代初頭、VTRの開発競争が米、欧、日でなされた。テレビ信号をテープ上への書くための様々な走査方式が検討される中で、最初にトランスバース走査方式が実用化された。約20年後、完成度の高いヘリカル走査方式のVTRが現れ、以後、放送用VTRはすべてこの方式を採用し、多くの進歩を遂げた。本稿では、放送用VTRの歴史を振り返り、日本企業が実用VTRの開発において大きな力を持った理由について考察する。

要約(英語): At the dawn of video tape recording in the early 1950s, various recording systems were proposed by American, European and Japanese engineers. The first practical system was the transverse scanning system. Twenty years later, helical scanning systems gained in popularity. This paper considers the factors that Japanese manufacturers being a dominant force of practical VTRs.
