要約(英語): The development history of fuel cells is described with both technical invention and social background at each stage. After the dawn period of fuel cell principle experiments in early 19th century, the first application of PEFC was on a space craft and it was substituted by AFC later around 1960s. Onsite and distributed PAFC generators have been developed to enlarge consumption of natural gas around 1970 followed by MCFC and SOFC large central station development to secure energy after twice oil crisis in 1970s. Remarkable performance of PEFC around 1990 has accelerated the development of household PEFCs and fuel cell vehicles assuming hydrogen society.
