Their market share (especially in the UnitedStates) is rapidly growing in recent years. While enjoying the benefits in termsof speed and convenience provided by the new feature, the importance ofsecurity must not be underestimated. Considerable concerns over the securityand privacy of RFID technology used for contactless payment have been raisedfor some time. In fact, diverse attacks against fielded systems have alreadybeen found and demonstrated by some proof-of-concept implementations.The goal of this paper is to give an overview over the state of research in thesecurity of RFID-enabled payment cards. The study includes a basicintroduction to the RFID technology and the RFID-enabled payment cards,identifies types of attacks that have been discussed.
