要約(日本語): To make sustainable off-grid electric power systems such as that in remote islands, the introduction of renewable energy power sources becomes an issue. If we view this as an optimization problem that maximizes the happiness of mankind, it seems that not only engineering research but also humanities and social sciences viewpoints are necessary. Nevertheless, it is not clear what fundamental items are in this problem before the quantative research such as what mathematical form should be adopted, how to proceed with joint research by multidisciplinary researchers, and how to cooperate with them, etc.In this paper, Kauai island which is a remote island in Hawaii, USA is taken up as an example of optimization research. We summarize the contents investigated about general history and culture of the island, the history of power supply, and etc.
